Sustainability
The World Championships 2021 in Oberstdorf is not supposed to be only a 2-week sports event. The Organising Committee has made it its mission to act sustainably for sports, tourism and the environment in the best possible way.

GUIDELINE 2: MODERN SPORTS FACILITIES FOR THE FUTURE
The World Championships create infrastructural impulses to successfully strengthen the Nordic Ski sport and further develop other activities in Oberstdorf. Furthermore, all people should have access to sports and exercise. The aim is a long-term use for tourism and sports and their compatibility.
GUIDELINE 3: PROTECTION OF ENVIRONMENT, CLIMATE AND RESOURCES – TRUSTWORTHY
Oberstdorf shows a considerate use of resources with all its sports facilities. The building, use, renovation and modernisation of the facilities should gear towards the goal of a climate-neutral building stock till 2050. Negative impacts on nature and landscape are going to be avoided to the greatest possible extent and unavoidable impact reduced to a minimum and extensively compensated.
GUIDELINE 4: TRANSPORT – THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS OF SHORT, ACCESSIBLE WAYS
Shift from greatest parts of street traffic towards rail and public transport by an improvement of incentive systems. Attractive offers of public transport are going to be expanded further to reduce the motorised individual traffic in the long run and especially minimise traffic during event days in Oberstdorf.
GUIDELINE 5: FOR AN ACTIVE AND HEALTHY OBERSTDORF
Intact nature, sports and culture are considered important cornerstones of a sustainable development. Their protection is an imperative foundation to face future challenges and to develop the municipality of Oberstdorf and its citizens with regional adjustments.
GUIDELINE 6: CROSS-COUNTRY CENTRE RIED 2021
The impulse of the World Championships should be used to develop the cross-country centre Ried adequately for sports and environment. Central guiding principle is the “open sports centre”, which is open all year round for sport-enthusiastic people: high-performance and (junior) competitive athletes, mass sports, tourists and locals, people of all age – with or without handicaps.
GUIDELINE 7: COMMITMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION
For all involved protagonists, commitment is an important fundament of the process, because commitment and the guarantee for an adequate implementation of operations and actions are decisive factors for the sustainability strategy’s credibility on local level, but also from national and international point of view.
